For many children summertime provides an opportunity for vacation away with family, exploring new adventures, and even progressing in learning. However, for many children living in inner-city communities, they must contend with a different set of circumstances which often causes regression in math and reading skills, boring days inside of an apartment while watching television shows that are unwholesome and not to mention the reality that many will go without having nutritious meals, meeting new friends, or having fun.
The Cornerstone Summer Day Camp is an eight-week camp that focuses on educational enrichment, helping children grow in their faith, meeting new friends, and receiving nutritious meals all while having LOTS OF FUN. This year, Cornerstone will offer this FREE camp for 75 children in the South Dallas/Fair Park neighborhood. The camp will be held daily from June 17th – August 16th – 10 AM to 2 PM all within a loving, caring and constructive environment.
Americorp workers provided by City Square (www.citysquare.org) will assist with academic enrichment and youth who have exemplified maturity and leadership have been hired from the neighborhood to assist in leading Bible Studies. Together along with mission teams coming as close as Dallas and as far away as London, England will have a tremendous and lasting impact on the lives of children not only at the camp which will be held at Cornerstone's facilities but also various parks, recreation centers, and school playgrounds.
If you would like to assist in providing summer fun, enrichment, and character building for neighborhood children here are some ways you might consider helping:
> Volunteer to serve as a reading/math partner
> Volunteer to prepare and/or serve lunch
> Provide small incentive gifts (under $5.00)
> Sponsor or contribution towards a field trip
> Contribute towards the salary of the summer director
In order to assist neighborhood children with the necessary supplies for the start of the 2013 school year, Cornerstone will sponsor a BACK TO SCHOOL CARNIVAL on Saturday, August 17, 2013 - 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM. In preparation for this event, Cornerstone is collecting backpacks and school supplies. The goal is to serve 1,000 children this year.
