Thank you so much for taking out of your busy holiday season of reading and sending Christmas cards, shopping for that perfect Christmas gift, decorating the Christmas tree, preparing your home for family and friends, and dreaming of a white Christmas to read the Cornerstone update. We are so thankful to you for the role you play in helping Cornerstone to providing hope to many in the South Dallas/Fair Park community. As we reflect over the past year, we must say that your amazing support has allowed us continue to and share God’s love to “the least, the last, the lost, and the lonely” in tangible ways.
11th Annual Christmas Store was held on December 9th and 10th and because of the generosity of the members of Valley Ranch Baptist Church (www.vrbc.net) over 1,300 children will wake up Christmas morning with gifts under the tree. One grandmother shared how this ministry was so significant this year because all savings and other resources were used to save her home from foreclosure. Guidestone Financial Resources, Richardson First Baptist Church, Baylor Aramark, Global Harvest Fellowship, and many other individuals help to assist other families which will make it a Merry Christmas for many.
Cornerstone Playground Project was completed on Saturday, October 29th. Over 700 volunteers joined the staff from Kaboom (www.kaboom.org) and Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Texas (www.bcbstx.com) and worked six hours to build a safe place in the South Dallas community. The local neighborhood park is often frequented by prostitute, drug dealers and users, and others which creates a negative environment. The new playground has been a welcomed addition to the community that is being greatly utilized.
Reach4Hope Homework Center (www.reach4hope.com) continues to see the grades of children in the community rise. Many of the children who are enrolled are being raised by single parents or grandparents who are not able to assist the children with homework and special school projects. Volunteers from Dallas Baptist University, Southern Methodist University, and other church congregations give of their time every Monday-Friday from 3:30 to 6:00 PM to help these young people who will be tomorrow’s leaders.
Celebrating Children in the Community is one of the ways in which Birthday Blessing Texas is working alongside of Cornerstone to touch the lives of neighborhood children. Each month children are selected to have a birthday party in their honor in which they are able to invite family and friends. Each child is also given a gift. As the number of children served continues to grow more help is needed. Please visit www.birthdayblessingtx.com to discover ways in which you can help us serve children.
Fall Festival provides a safe alternative to the tradition “Trick or Treat”. Children from the neighborhood are able to come to the church’s families and enjoy games, food, and lots of fun. This year on Halloween night over 300 children dressed up in their costumes were able to have a safe evening. Thanks again so much to the many donors who donated candy, prizes, and games to make this event a success.
Thanksgiving Day Luncheon allowed many who would not have a traditional meal enjoy turkey, dressing, and all the trimmings. Once again, the members of Richardson First Baptist Church (www.fbcr.org) and Kessler Park Baptist Church provided the meal and members from our partner churches across the Metroplex helped served. The members of Park Cities Baptist Church (www.pcbc.org) assisted by taking meals to homebound senior citizens and Park Manor Apartments.
Phase I of the “New” Philemon House is now open! Volunteer teams from several churches have been working on the past several months to assist Cornerstone’s Prison Re-Entry ministry in converting a former apartment complex that was recently notorious for drugs and prostitution into a home that will be able to assist up to 50 men in transitioning back into the community after prison. Thanks so much for generosity of the members of Lake Pointe Church (www.lakepointe.org) for assisting in acquiring the property. Open House for the complex at 2728 Holmes Street, Dallas, TX 75215, will be held in January. For more information, please visit www.trinityrestoration.org.
Are you good with a camera? We need you! HELP-PORTRAIT is once again providing family portraits to those in the community. If you are able to volunteer on Saturday, December 18th, please contact Taylor McCabe @ email@example.com or by calling 469-585-8799. The local news did a story last year and it can be viewed at http://www.wfaa.com/community/Priceless-portraits-put-smiles-on-faces-of-less-fortunate-112410584.html
Want to help the homeless carry their load? Cornerstone’s ministry is assisting many of the homeless living near the downtown area. In addition the following items are always needed in the Cornerstone Clothes/Shower Complex: adult men sized jeans, socks, tennis shoes, underwear, hats, and extra-large coats. Also the Cornerstone Kitchen consistently needs: Canned Food, Pasta, Spaghetti Sauce, Syrofoam Plates and Cup and Plastic Forks, Sugar, Coffee and Cream, Drinks, Cleaning Supplies, Napkins, Aluminum Foil, Plastic Wrap, Scrubbing Pads, Butter, Seasoning Salt, Gravy Mix Packets, Salt & Pepper.
